Twanda Rolle: Grandmother’s Chocolate

Grandmother’s Chocolate

My grandmother’s pestle
A drumstick
thumping
in the mortar
like rhythm and friction
between rests
she rolls out
clumps of brown
like mud pie
and then the pestle
beat slowed
to staccato
faint friction and rhythm
the coda
waiting for
the applause
